Why get married in Denmark?
The documentation required is simple and straightforward in Denmark. That means that the whole thing can happen quickly and easily without hassle.
Is the marriage valid worldwide?
Yes, but we recommend having your marriage certificate “apostilled”. An apostille gives an extra level of international acceptabillity, it is a validation of the Danish Foreign Ministry in accordance with the 1961 Hague Apostille Convention. We can arrange this Apostille for you it takes up to two weeks.
Can anyone get married in Denmark?
Yes, the only exceptions are asylum-seekers and refugees, who cannot get married here.
What is the ceremony like, and how long does it take?
The Ceremony will take place at the Town Hall in Tønder or in Ribe´s Old City Hall. You will stand in front of the registrar while she or he conducts the ceremony. This ceremony is surprisingly short. The ceremony will be in English or German. You are enquired to say “yes” and you may exchange rings, if you would like to. Thereafter you both sign the registry. After the witnesses and registrar have signed the final paperwork, you are married!
Is it possible to change my name at the wedding day?
No, as a resident of a foreign country, you will have to change your name, once you return to your country of residence.
How do we register the marriage afterwards?
Usually you need to take your new wedding certificate to the local authorities where you live, but how this registration will be depends on the country in which you live. Some countries will want you to contact their embassy in Denmark before the marriage here.
Can we have a church wedding?
No, we are sorry. It is only possible to get married in a church, if you are Scandinavian or a member of the Danish Church.
Do we need to bring witnesses?
No you do not need to. It is a part of the service.
Must we bring original documents to Denmark, when we come?
Yes original documents or confirmed copies must be presented. Subsequently, the examination will take place, and you are expected to take up residency in the chosen municipality during the case administration. For further information: Documents Ribe or Documents Tønder.
Can we use euros in Denmark?
Yes, most places accept euro notes, even though Denmark has Danish Kroner. Your change will be given in Danish kroner, and the exchange rate may not be very good.
Can we pay in cash?
Yes, if you have a written agreement from us, you can pay cash in euros or Danish kroner when we meet the first time at the address of registration.
