Information on getting married in Tønder
List of necessary documents (all documents to be submitted by both parties):
To verify that you are legally entitled to stay in Denmark, we need a copy of your travel documents: passport, ID card, visa if required, residence permit, Schengen entry stamp.
Certificate of marital status (no older than four months) from all the places you have lived since you were old enough to get married, as well as from your current place of residence (if different).
The certificate of marital status must show your date of birth, place of birth, address, citizenship and marital status.
The certificate must be translated into Danish, English or German if in another language.
American and British soldiers who are stationed in Germany must, instead of the “Certificate of marital status”, provide a “Permission for marriage” issued by their commanding officer showing their current marital status and address. You must also provide documentation to verify your legal stay in Denmark.
Birth certificate: If you are unable to obtain a birth certificate, production of a valid travel document showing your place of birth will be sufficient.
NB! Legalisation of all documents may be required.
If one or both parties have previously been married, we will also need the following documents:
Divorce:
Divorce decree: complete original divorce decree, legally signed. The endorsement must bear the text “The Decree of Divorce has not been and cannot be appealed to a higher court. The parties are free to remarry”. Only decrees and certificates pertaining to your latest marriage should be submitted.
- The Registry Office must approve divorce decrees before you will be able to get an appointment. Decrees should be submitted in the original and in translation if not issued in Danish, English or German. Translations alone are not sufficient.
Death:
Death certificate: death certificates must be approved before you will be able to get an appointment. Certificates should be submitted in the original and in translation if not issued in Danish, English or German. Translations alone are not sufficient.
NB! Divorce decrees and death certificates issued in countries outside the European Union (with the exception of the United States, Canada, New Zealand and Australia ao.) must be presented in the original along with a Legalisation document/Apostille.
The complete Legalisation document must also be translated and submitted.
Legalisation document/Apostille:
Legalisation document: Tripartite verification of the original document (not a copy of the original) by the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country, as well by the Danish or German Embassy.
Apostille: Single verification of the original document (not a copy of the original) by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country.
After submitting your documents to us, you will be notified once they have been examined and approved. Once you receive this information, you must choose either a Monday or a Tuesday on which to register in person at the Registry Office in Tønder. Persons under the age of 18 must present a special permit in order to marry. This permit may be obtained at the Registry Office where you wish to marry (please contact us for further information).
